Drug interactions with Accutane – Explained
A detailed explanation of the potentially negative interactions that may occur with the use of Accutane in combination with some of the drugs is given below.
With some antibiotics:
When Accutane was taken in combination with some types of antibiotics there were instances of pseudotumor cerebri (a type of high blood pressure within the cranium). Hence, it is strongly advised that such antibiotics must not be taken with Accutane.
With corticosteroids:
When Accutane is taken in combination with corticosteroids, it may lead to an increased risk for osteoporosis. This drug interaction may be caused only when corticosteroids are taken orally or in the injection form and not when it is inhaled or used in nasal sprays.
With Phenytoin:
When Accutane is combined with phenytoin there may be an increased risk for osteoporosis. Hence, it is better to check with the healthcare provider before combining the two medications.
With Progestin-only birth control pills:
Women who belong to the childbearing age group must ideally use two types of birth control measures while they are on Accutane and also one month prior and one month after being on this acne medication. The effectiveness of Progestin-only birth control pills may be greatly reduced when used in combination with Accutane (these are less effective when compared to oral contraception which contains a combination of progestin and estrogen)
With St. John’s Wort:
Ideally, you should never do any self-treatment with St. John’s Wort while you are on Accutane. If you suffer from depression, you should be thoroughly evaluated by your healthcare provider. Even St. John’s Wort can reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills and this could create serious problems especially in women who are on Accutane because it can cause very severe birth defects.
With Vitamin A:
Since Accutane is related to Vitamin A, it should never be combined as it may result in toxicity.
All drug interactions with Accutane may not be discussed here and it is better to have a detailed discussion with the healthcare provider prior to taking Accutane. You may also discuss with the pharmacist about certain specific drug interactions with Accutane that may be applicable to you.
